When a young Indian woman and her husband walked into an Irish maternity ward on 21st October 2012 they unwittingly walked into the shameful morass that is Ireland's legislative position on abortion. The refusal to Savita and Praveen Halappanavar of a termination of the 17-week pregnancy she was miscarrying, and her tragic death a week later from septicaemia, catapulted the question of who controlled women's wombs right to the top of the political and social agenda. Kitty Holland looks at who Savita was, how significant her being non-Irish was and how her community's reaction to her death shaped the parameters of the debate which followed
